Kurinuki Ring Box in Wild Clays

Kurinuki Ring Box in Wild Clays
Kurinuki box carved from chocolate stoneware and slathered in various hand harvested wild clays from Sage’s property.
This small box is beautifully suited to hold rings, earrings, or loose gems.
The term “kurinuki” means “to carve” and refers to the process of hollowing a solid block of clay into a functional object. This method is often described as meditative, as it takes careful consideration and patience for the object to reveal itself from the clay. The final form is a collaboration between artist + material. It requires both skill and sensitivity from the artist to allow the the clay a choice in what it becomes.
Wild clay beautifully exhibits the imperfections of its untamed origin, resulting in a variability of finish and surface texture.
Approximately 1 3/4” square
Hand wash only, as necessary
Hand carved + hand harvested
Beautiful, yet gnarly. Colorful, but dull. Rough and smooth. Wild clay beautifully exhibits the imperfections of its untamed origin, resulting in a variability of finish and surface texture.
Nestled in the hillside surrounding Sage's home and pottery studio, lies an array of natural materials to be foraged. With a little attention and a lot of curiosity, she crafts wild clay, pigments, and various plant fibers into functional wares of the home. This clay is more than a medium; it is a connection to the land.
Each piece goes through a series of careful steps, with the clay being minimally refined and then delicately layered over multiple firings. This method allows the clay to meld together, transforming into a beautifully finished textured surface that reflects the depth and character of the location it was gathered from.
Raw clay was collected + applied straight from the earth.
