Alderwood Bowl + Brass Lid | Joshua Hughes + Sage Cortez
An Alderwood bowl, mended with many brass staples + completed with a hand forged brass lid.
Thoughts from Sage:
"This bowl was made from Alderwood collected near the bank of the Wallowa River. Joshua turned the log when it was still green (not fully dry), so as the bowl cured, it developed splits around the thinner areas of the rim. At that point in the process, many woodworkers would scrap a piece with this sort of imperfection—but for me, I know it’s just an indicator of the life an object lives.
The tree grew and lived along the waters edge.
Housing birds and timber tigers and insects.
The canopy created shade for the creatures and plants living below it.
It fed from the ecosystem and contributed to it too.
The tree fell after some heavy wind.
We came across it then, scattered and broken in the dirt, covered in ants and surrounded by mosquitoes, and decided to cut off a small section.
Joshua crafted that piece into a bowl.
The green wood shifted and shrank as it dried.
It split along its thinnest points.
I saw that, and fastened them together.
A highlight, acknowledging one tiny part of its existence.
Now it can go on, doing whatever it’s to do from here."
5 1/2" in diameter x 5" tall, including the lid
Finished in food-grade coconut oil. Wipe clean. Never place in dishwasher. Do not leave submerged in water. Once fully dry, re-apply oil as needed to preserve wood and maintain luster.

All H+F wooden items are made from fallen or salvaged Oregon hardwood. This means every object is entirely individual, bearing its own unique figuring, knots, texture, and grain.
Visible mending is an approach that celebrates the history of an object. An object that has been repaired is an object that is appreciated. Each stitch or staple tells a story of existence.
