Nestled in the hillside surrounding Sage's home and pottery studio, lies an array of natural materials to be foraged. With a little attention and a lot of curiosity, she crafts wild clay, pigments, and various plant fibers into functional wares of the home. This clay is more than a medium; it is a connection to the land.
Beautiful, yet gnarly. Colorful, but dull. Rough and smooth.
At first glance, this glaze only appears dark + metallic, but the real fascination is in its transformative nature. As harsh daylight caresses the surface, it illuminates the depth of color hidden within — a reflection of the location from which it came.
Each piece goes through a series of careful steps, with the clay being minimally refined and then delicately layered over multiple firings. This method allows the clay to meld together, transforming into a beautifully finished glazed surface that reflects the depth and character of the location it was gathered from.
Wild clay collected from the edge of Tick Hill in Wallowa, Oregon.
Fired to 2232° F, oxidation.
Wild clay beautifully exhibits the imperfections of its untamed origin, resulting in a variability of finish and surface texture.
